Company History

WEAC Limited formal known as (Wolsey Emergency Audio Communications) was founded by John Pullen, then of H.G. Wolsey Ltd. (who were the major installers for Tannoy Ltd., for the best part of 20 years) and Bill Preedy, previously of Tannoy Ltd., in 1978.

The company philosophy was "to make bells talk". The aim was to address the recognised short comings of Fire Bells and their ability to give people in danger clear and concise information about the emergency taking place around them. WEAC suggested that people could be put at reduced risk if effective communications could be established.

Systems were developed in conjunction with PA system manufacturers which would monitor the critical signal paths in order to provide the user with assured confidence that the system would operate when called upon to do so. Initially the systems were installed as a direct replacement for the existing bells, often using the same wiring.

These systems were originally described as Emergency PA systems. The later generic description of 'Voice Alarm' systems was considered, by many, to give the wrong impression of the purpose of the improved communications, which was to reduce the publics alarm by providing accurate information and advice, in a clear and concise manner.
